Heart Break, Not What You Think – Ceramic Necklaces

Heart Break, Not What You Think – Ceramic Necklaces by StudioKahn

Ever since childhood we are taught that breaking is bad. Playing with the ball next to a vase – a bad idea. Jumping from the 4th step of a staircase – another bad idea. Then you grow up, and find out that your heart can be broken too, but no Super Glue or casts strong enough to fix it.And now, grown up and knowing a few things about broken vases and hearts, you know it’s a fragile world and that people who break things intentionally are either really – but really – angry, or they’re part of the My Greek Wedding cast. But be honest – how many times have you felt like breaking something? Just taking whatever is in front of you and just throwing it on the floor? Just break loose, break free, give yourself a break…

Well, Israeli designers couple Mey and Boaz Kahn of StudioKahn think that breaking is a good thing. They want you to break their items – in fact, you can use their items only by breaking them. Their Fragile series features home and personal accessories, made of ceramics, which become functional only when snapped.

Their beautiful Fragile Salt and Pepper Shaker has been featured in leading international design competitions and magazines (including winning the Dining in 2015 Designboom’s International Design competition), celebrating the couple’s original and fresh approach to design. It sure spices things up when you hold the shaker in your hand and thinking of breaking it into halves. Would it work? Am I going to ruin it? Am I really supposed to break it? But once you do, the feeling is actually liberating. We’re serious.

The new StudioKahn items in our I Design collection are necklaces which are based on the same concept of deconstruct-create: The Fragile Necklace and the Fragile Magnet necklaces. Only when breaking and snapping them, they become the unique necklaces they are.

The ceramic Fragile Necklace comes in one piece, with the text “Snap before Use” printed on it, in English or Hebrew. Only after snapping the links, one by one, the necklace becomes flexible and ready to wear.

The Fragile Heart Magnet necklace gives a broken heart a whole new meaning. It looks like a small box of wings at first, but when snapping it in the middle, the two halves are connected again with a magnet scalp, becoming a heart pendant. If only fixing broken hearts in real life was so simple.

When you first see the Fragile Spheres Magnet necklace it looks like a small atom shapes sculpture, delicate and smooth. Here again you face the “should I break it?” question, but when you do, you can pull out the hidden chain, and turn into a wearable piece of jewelry.
